Ben Shan Oolong (本山乌龙) is a captivating Fujian Oolong tea, with its name directly translating to "Original Mountain" or "Native Mountain," hinting at its deep roots in the region. Hailing from the renowned tea-producing region of Anxi in Fujian province, this tea is a close cousin to the world-famous Tie Guan Yin (Iron Goddess of Mercy) Oolong.

Often cultivated in the same fertile mountains and processed with similar techniques, Ben Shan Oolong shares a remarkable kinship with Tie Guan Yin. So much so that it is sometimes offered as a distinct, yet equally captivating, alternative or even a "replacement" for its more famous relative. This tea offers a unique opportunity not just to savor a delicious Oolong, but also for an educational journey into the nuanced world of Fujian Oolongs, allowing you to discern the subtle differences that make each varietal special.

Taste, Appearance, and Aroma of the Tea

When you first see Ben Shan Oolong, you'll notice its dry leaves are tightly rolled into small, vibrant green pellets. Once brewed, it creates a beautiful, transparent, pale golden-green liquor. Take a sniff, and you'll be greeted by a wonderfully fresh and clean aroma, often with delicate floral hints like orchids. The taste is just as refreshing – clean, crisp, and delightfully vegetal. This pronounced, invigorating vegetal quality is Ben Shan Oolong's defining signature, the very essence that distinctly sets it apart from other teas and leaves a wonderfully invigorated sensation.

Health Benefits of the Tea

As a lightly oxidized Oolong, Ben Shan Oolong retains many of the beneficial properties found in green teas, while also offering the unique advantages of Oolong. It is rich in antioxidants, which combat free radicals and support cellular health. Regular consumption can aid in digestion, boost metabolism, and contribute to weight management. Oolongs are also known for their ability to help reduce stress, improve mental alertness, and support cardiovascular health. The unique combination of catechins and polyphenols in this tea makes it a potent ally for overall well-being.

How to Brew a Nice Cup of Ben Shan

To fully appreciate the nuanced layers and evolving flavors, we highly recommend brewing in a gaiwan. We recommend using around 8g for a medium gaiwan, or 10g for a larger one, allowing the leaves ample space to unfurl and release their full spectrum of aromas and tastes over many infusions.

Gaiwan Brewing (Recommended):

  1. Use approximately 8g of tea for a medium gaiwan, or 10g for a larger gaiwan.
  2. Pour boiling water (95-100ºC) over leaves, then quickly discard (rinse). This "rinse" step helps to awaken the leaves and remove any tea dust.
  3. First Infusion: Steep 5 seconds.
  4. Subsequent Infusions: Increase steeping time by 5 seconds. This tea can be brewed 7-10+ times, revealing new layers of flavor and aroma with each pour.

Western Style Brewing (Teapot or Mug):

  1. Use 2-3 teaspoons (approx. 5-7g) for ½ liter of water.
  2. Pour boiling water (95-100ºC).
  3. Steep for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Can be brewed about 5 times +, with subsequent infusions requiring slightly longer steeping times.
